The Southern Chapter of the Indian Society of Nephrology was established by leading nephrologists from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The Chapter was formed with the efforts of Professor M.S. Amaresan, who became the First Nephrologist to qualify from the region.
The Chapter has grown over the decades to become a vibrant scientific society that organises annual conferences (ISNSCCON), webinars, and continuing medical education programmes to advance the practice of nephrology throughout South India.
The First Department of Nephrology was started in December 1971 at Madras Medical College by Prof. M.S. Amaresan after qualifying as the First Nephrologist in the country.
In the same year, Prof. Georgi Abraham started the Nephrology Department at Christian Medical College, Vellore. The decade saw the establishment of dialysis units in various southern states, laying the foundation for modern nephrology practice in India.
These pioneers set the stage for what would become one of the most active chapters of the Indian Society of Nephrology, with a rich tradition of academic excellence and patient care.
The Southern Chapter of the Indian Society of Nephrology (ISNSC) represents nephrologists from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. The chapter holds annual scientific conferences and conducts regular CME programmes.
ISNSC has been at the forefront of promoting kidney health awareness, training young nephrologists, and fostering research collaboration among institutions across southern India.
